Mapping Violence
Places of historical violence are indelibly marked in both history and media, the place of the violence becoming a symbol of violence. Dealy Plaza, Auschwitz, The Killing Fields, and others are both real places and cinema places. In both the real and the cinema, the place becomes synonym for the violence. I’m curious to map out places of violence in film, across New York City. As a second data point, I want to show where crime is occurring in the real New York.
As I’ve started doing preliminary research, I’m already feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of films out there. I’m considering focusing on two or three films, rather than two per decade.
In terms of URT, doing a sprawling map of all crime in the city will be difficult or impossible, I’m thinking of either “famous” crimes (Son of Sam) or headline crimes. Any thoughts on this would be most appreciated!

You know what I’m going to say: rein it in! 🙂 Few points, each fully fleshed out, is better than many points, each treated superficially.
Excellent photo choice 🙂
